飲み物 discoveries by sarah

a few weeks ago the lovely Australian Al left me a message on my facebook wall. she had stumbled across an article about a new Valentines Day Japanese drink that she wanted me to find and try out for her.

i gallantly accept any challenge. bring it on.
{if you have anything you want me to do / try for you before i leave Japan, let me know, don`t be shy}
i went to the コンビ二 `conbini` (convenience store) next to my subway station every day for a week until it finally arrived.

while i was perusing the drink aisles in my down time, i found these two beauties that i also decided to try out for you -

Vinegar and Milk... this was... how should i put it...
GROSS.
{It tasted like weird grapefruit yogurt.}

Love Mode Ginger...
this was acceptable. But, you know... if it was there and I had nothing else to do, I would probably take a sip.
and finally, the grand moment of soft drink research... the Chocolate Sparkling.
When I first read the article Al sent me, I was suspicious. I envisioned myself on a sugar high to end all sugar highs. I`m not usually a person who craves sugar.
BUT, DAMN, this stuff is GOOD.
I took my first sip and thought... could it be?! is it really this tasty? and then, doubting my own opinion, i bought three more bottles and took them 1) to school, 2) to my friend`s house and 3) on a group date and made everyone try it and report back.
.
Crowd pleaser. 100 % success rate.
.
The marketing for this drink centres around Valentines Day... you see, in Japan, Valentines Day is a bit different to other countries. In Japan, only the girls give chocolates to the boys they like. And then, exactly a month later, on March 14th , is White Day when the boys pick the girl they like the best from all the Valentines Day gifts they got and then give that girl a chocolate. I think its atrocious. And sexist :p
.
Chocolate Sparkling is something girls are encouraged to buy for themselves for Valentines Day.
.
P.S. However, some boys might want to go against the grain and actually give a girl a chocolate on Valentines (gasp)... so new for this year are these 逆チョコ `GyakuChoco` or `Opposite Chocolates`
DEFY tradition, boys! Do it!
THE END

I really want to try it (Chocolate Sparkling...Most definitely not Milk and Vinegar)! Also, that's way too much pressure. I would definitely just be holding out for a boy to defy tradition and give me something.

ahh i am so excited it tasted good!!! i didnt know what to expect!

i was thinking maybe like a burp taste after drinking lots of lemonade and eating a piece of chocolate... Bubbly with a faint taste of creamy stomach chocolateness- DAMN THAT SOUNDS TASTY!

but vinegar and milk? what the hell.

i saw those chocolates at the store and was completely baffled as to why the writing was all backwards.

i'll be sure to let my boy know why! haha

I love the World Kitchen stuff (the lemon peel and honey one is delectable, the caramel au lait is beautiful, the diablo ginger ale is so tasty), but I skipped and skipped the milk vinegar. I'm glad to know that it is indeed nasty.

vinegar and milk?!!! i salute your dedication to your blog readers...because it takes someone with guts to sip that :P

out of curiosity...did it taste mostly of vinegar? or was it more milky? or was it just that foul that you didn't want to even pause to think about it???

chocolate sparkling, on the other hand, sounds kinda cool. i'd so drink that on valentines day, who needs roses when you've got something that's both cocoa-y AND carbonated?

I want some! Sarah... you must smuggle lots of it here! Do they only sell it around valentines day though?

We're surrounded by silly heart-shaped nonsense, I think something chocolatey and sparkling maakes so much more sense!

I thought there was a camera glitch with the backwards chocolates! I kinda like those and might have to give some away LOL!

All of those drinks look nasty tho...

milk and vinegar? you are one brave Sarah, Sarah.

SO GLAD you liked the other drink-- I really want to try it now! And man, those Japanese Men have really figured out how to turn Japanese Valentine's Day to their favor. Buy opposite chocolate, guys!

LOL I love your message at the end. I had no clue that Japan had two version of Valentine's Day, or yummy drinks like that (mmm, vinegar and milk ... NOT!).

And thanks to this entry, I'll definitely be trying to think of things I want you to try there! :)

i think the the most romantic chocolate we mave in SA is a P.S. bar with "Soen My" scribbled on it...(does that even work?)

Also, since you are offering to do stuff, do you think you could try out 'Human Tetris' before you get back?

(please take a video...)

Being Canadian, and male, I've always been more on the giving rather than receiving end of Valentine's Day. Frankly, as far as I'm concerned, the Japanese model sounds great!
1. If the girl forgets you get to forget too.
2. The gift is always chocolate - no need to worry whether to get flowers, candy or something else.
3. The girl I spend most of my time with hates chocolate. Bonus!!
